My miniature schnauzer has a raised brown crusty bump under his beard/mustache. What could it be?
I've never noticed the bump before. I'd say it's a dime-sized raised area with brown scabby-ness on the top, and the brown scab is flaking off in tiny bits (like dandruff-size almost). It doesn't seem to be bothering him, I haven't noticed him itching it or anything, and he didn't seem too bothered by me poking at it. Any idea what it might be? I assume I'd know if it was a tick bite, right? (Like there'd be a big engorged tick there if it was that...?)
I am more looking for help right now while the vet is closed--I can't take him to the vet now, and I know I'll need to, but I'm worried now. But answering "take him to the vet" is rather obvious and not terribly helpful.
Could be several things:
1) A "hot spot" that's drying up. Dogs get them a lot in hot weather.
2) Inflamed flea bite.
3) skin cancer---but you said it's drying up, right
4) An old wound or scrape that's healing
5) My dog has a skin condition called malaysa, which causes skin whelps and strong odor. Is there an odor with it. It's treated with cephalexyn and ketoconizole.
If it doesn't dry up shortly, it would be a good idea to take him to the vet.
