French Wave

What is your favorite character from French New Wave cinema?

This is kinda inspired by Earwax's new question. So what 's your favorite character from a french film in that era and why?
If you have any interest in this question you might like the other one I mentioned:

YES! YES! A Jules Et Jim fan.
Sorry. I meant to stipulate female characters. Most responders caught on anyway.

The Jean Luc Godard film "the Mother and the Whore" is one of the better french films I've seen because of it's simplicity. I didn't care for either of Alexander's lovers but it was realistic. A lot of women end up the other woman to some loser of a boyfriend. I never quite understood the title though. It seemed liked both his women were mothering him.

An introduction to French films – Necessary for film researchers

A brief idea on French films proves very beneficial for the film researchers. Lumiere brothers are one of the biggest names of French cinemas. They were given the title of "fathers of modern cinemas" because it was them who invented the idea of moving pictures. Naturally a study of French movies becomes important for any kind of movie research. They were also the first people to have made films.

In a place called grand café in Paris in the year 1985 they showcased their films. In those days films consisted of reels which were of 2 minutes. This was done for audiences who paid for it. They remained quite popular for sometime. But after the break of World War 1, their work suffered some interruptions. Nevertheless they continued their work of making newsreels and small documentaries.

The story teller in the world of French films, George Melies was also a contemporary of the Lumiere brothers. He had a powerful vision and was game for experiments.  He proved his talents by introducing special effects in French movies. He started introducing tricks in his films, like vanishing acts by simply removing the actress after her first take during shooting. Some of his films were "the conjuring of a woman at the house of Robert Houdini". This happened to be his first edited movie based on special effects. He was successful in building his own studio in the year 1897.

At the beginning of the 20th century, French cinemas saw the creations of Charles Pathe who monopolized films to such an extent that he was called "the Napoleon of film in France".

The thirst for movies in France suffered a set back before 1920 s. This was mainly due to the World War 1. There hardly took any developments in the field of cinema during that period. Many young French film makers showed keen interests after this dismal period was over. People experimented with a wide range of ideas and themes. Some of the noteworthy names of that period were Rene Clair, Jean Renoir and Marcel Cairne. The films had strong narratives, at times satirical to the society and had poetic beauty as well.

In 1939 French cinema suffered once again due to World War 2. Everything became quite stagnant during that time .It started flourishing again by 1950 s. A number of young directors stepped over the pulpit of French film making. With them the new wave cinema in France started. Some of the directors being Louis Malle, Jaques Rivette, Alain Resnais and many more. Though they were quite different from each other but the same passion of movie making drove them.

Their work gave rise to quite a number of low budget films which were in no way low in quality. From these films cinematic icons were later discovered.
